Firstly, I am picking up my new puppy tomorrow so madness is soon going to ensue! I have also been working on some commissions and setting up some new stuff on my etsy shop. Alongside this I am also doing a part time photography course, its always been a secondary hobby of mine but I am interested in learning a bit more about it.<br />
<br />
Last week I did a photoshoot with a great friend of mine to document some older and some new costumes that will shortly be up on my etsy shop and I thought I would show you the results.<br />

<br />
Sorry its been so Long since I last posted, I have had a pretty busy summer and I have been working on a new website, which I will post a link to here as soon as it is completely finished.<br />
So far this summer, since graduating in June, I have worked on a production at the Edinburgh Lyceum Theatre as joint Costume Designer for their Summer on Stage production of 'Oh What a Lovely War', as well as working on a few commissions on the side (a new disney dress and some dapper 1940s suits) . I will post about all of them individually at some point. But firstly, I want to show you some photographs that were taken this weekend by a photographer friend of mine. They are old costumes that you will probably have seen before, but I decided I wanted to have some better quality images of them. It was a lot of fun anyway, gallivanting around the moors near my house, I am very lucky to have such beautiful scenery around where I live!<br />
<br />
So these are the 18th century stays, modelled by my beautiful cousin Charlotte...<br />

So I hope you will hear more from me soon, I plan to start updating this a bit more frequently. </div>

However, there were elements of it that I was happy with, the green leather jacket that was worn on top for example came out much better than expected. Anyway, I took a couple of photos during the fashion show when she was in full makeup so I might aswell put them here seen as I havent posted anything else much recently. Dr Gable is a character from my first project 'Uglies' which is a science fiction novel set 300 years in the future. I have made another costume from this project, Tally's costume, which was a knitted jumper and dress. The two characters show the opposing sides in the story; one naturalistic and free, the other heavily altered, structured and unnatural.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_37pUcPq41NGUr2GqUBGOzVRU16P5ePqwRRsiMkhCIyyceuMtEH2T8q0NUP4peoQlzfyNOH9ymJeGTxoCPy5sKn2lo_GZTqx46zcgTKQ18nJFIksQ5WX9zMhXlV47tDfGCZncUxL2FN4/s1600/drgable2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_37pUcPq41NGUr2GqUBGOzVRU16P5ePqwRRsiMkhCIyyceuMtEH2T8q0NUP4peoQlzfyNOH9ymJeGTxoCPy5sKn2lo_GZTqx46zcgTKQ18nJFIksQ5WX9zMhXlV47tDfGCZncUxL2FN4/s1600/drgable2.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
Shes the Evil character of the story, in case its not obvious...<br />

The offending silver bodice :( I made the toile and it fit perfectly on the model but for some reason when I made it out of the silver leather it just wouldn't go into shape the same way, it buckles and gathered and also seemed to have masses of excess fabric around the chest and neckline, no matter how much i took out of those seams it seemed to always gape.<br />
Lesson learned, never try to make complex shapes with leather...<br />
She is wearing the Bodice on top of a corset with extremely padded hips to try and create quite an extreme shape, I also don't think this worked that well. Basically the whole costume doesn't have the same structured/armoured look that I was going for. Ah well, you win some you lose some eyy<br />

Anyhoo there it is, my fourth and final costume of my final year at Edinburgh College of Art, the costume I kind of wish I hadn't bothered making...</div>
In other news, I have begun work on a new commission. Another Disney Dress! This time based on the dress worn by Anna to the Coronation in Frozen. Its exciting, I will do a separate post on that though when I start working on it properly :)<br />

I have been working on distressing the jacket, as the character has been travelling and battling. I used my dirty down sprays that I have posted about before, aswell as a cheese grater and a mud crayon, to give the dirtied appearance.<br />

I have done a lot of decorative stitching on the seams to give it the look of handmade and repaired by the Prince. In some sections Ii unpicked the seam and brought some of the fur through the seam to look like its almost burst open a bit.<br />

This step terrified me as it went bright orange and looked really awful. I then covered the rest in black shoe polish and used a blow torch to burn the shoe polish onto the metal. This has give the metal a darker more weathered look, and some of the rust does show through but more subtley than to begin with,<br />

I made a pair of hand quilted leather gauntlets which the metal shielding will be riveted onto. Wearing these around the studio makes me feel like a superhero...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYRTL0JXjNevRvCzoPxFtNFHFYxnbAQqZmbBJyKC9lQdxCsRvsxL9TJyavoaMWokUh63jLMf08Q9dthIOA-aLPPZlxXyB0vdZdTzzdeHQeEkZKAp3dYY-BMFlGdwNXYl0U4IVD1MKXPX4/s1600/IMG_0753.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYRTL0JXjNevRvCzoPxFtNFHFYxnbAQqZmbBJyKC9lQdxCsRvsxL9TJyavoaMWokUh63jLMf08Q9dthIOA-aLPPZlxXyB0vdZdTzzdeHQeEkZKAp3dYY-BMFlGdwNXYl0U4IVD1MKXPX4/s1600/IMG_0753.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
And finally, I made a pair of structured leg guards. I have taken a lot of photos of these as I made them so I think I will do a seperate post about that to show the process.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I will post about them tomorrow probably<br />

I have decided to make both Sleeping Beauty and the prince from this project, here are the designs for their costumes;<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSXPMJq3JAyKd1VQhJlRu8B-VnkjxWEHNRgFN9_T1yVCfIqaBivyMHlokkANP7sFGartfMWmOIUY5w2HpvDhSHrz3z6wzwYaBuU0XvZy5cta8kqAYmhXyGQ1vcrRNX7vsFmnAuQBID6IA/s1600/sleepingbeautyprincecombo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSXPMJq3JAyKd1VQhJlRu8B-VnkjxWEHNRgFN9_T1yVCfIqaBivyMHlokkANP7sFGartfMWmOIUY5w2HpvDhSHrz3z6wzwYaBuU0XvZy5cta8kqAYmhXyGQ1vcrRNX7vsFmnAuQBID6IA/s1600/sleepingbeautyprincecombo.jpg" height="238" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
I have mainly been working on the skirts for Sleeping Beauty, which are made out of lace and embroidered tulle, which I have them distressed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFwpg2XRe7Xsw7pSzBrDyjUs7vK8tis4vEORZ7yL5CD9QID1eI2hK-bhRxdJ3aBx523B7FUaknYZioovnaIJfhrG6fxpEKaJAy_vSqYe4v5c8p9NETpCptsqF8BAIc6lZeyRqwi0hyF4E/s1600/IMG_0598.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFwpg2XRe7Xsw7pSzBrDyjUs7vK8tis4vEORZ7yL5CD9QID1eI2hK-bhRxdJ3aBx523B7FUaknYZioovnaIJfhrG6fxpEKaJAy_vSqYe4v5c8p9NETpCptsqF8BAIc6lZeyRqwi0hyF4E/s1600/IMG_0598.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>

<div>
The top half of the dress is going to be digitally printed and embroidered with a design from a collaboration I am doing with an illustration student. As her illustration is not yet finished, I won't be able to proceed any further with that for now, but hopefully it should be done by the end of February and then I can print it and sew it all together.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have got the Princes costume all toiled out and ready to make out of the real fabric once I have had a fitting with my model on Wednesday. This week I have been spending time down in the metal workshop of my college plasma cutting and welding to create the armour that is worn on his shoulder and wrists. I haven't worked with metal for the last two years ( we did quite a bit in second year) so I wasn't sure how easy it would be, but after a bit of help and re introduction to the machines by Mark the technician it actually wasn't as hard as I was expecting. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Gauntlets;</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Both still need a tidy up and a bit of a fix up here and there, but they are nearly finished I think. Pretty chuffed with them seen as I had never made anything like this before.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So that's my current progress with those two costumes, hopefully I will have more to show you all soon :)</div>

<br />
For my 4th year design project I have been making costumes based on the Novel 'Uglies' by Scott Westerfeld. I had my final Crit for my first costume, based on the main character Tally Youngblood, at college today so while I had my model in the costume I decided to take a few photos of the finished costume.<br />
She wears an underskirt, a dress, a knitted jumper with detachable scarf/hood and then a long ginger wig that I styled.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The jumper has an open back, showing the buttoned up dress underneath.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I want this hair to be my own, maybe once the show is finished I can just wear this wig for fun...<br />

I embroidered along the bottom of the skirt and onto dissolvable embroidery paper so that when I wet it, it created that raggedy edge. I then dyed and distressed the rest of the skirt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqvAIcEqiRzmxv6dkB_jcwyg0kUY81N-CWv2oS4caGgxFcxJvqXyLFFAR_nFoIYWV0Sw1tFsoBtsVjwbqnKYqQf2QUHjX-6Hq0Rggn2x7fjn39SaSfahKIl2cG1yUGpZvh0elX6rFl89s/s1600/IMG_0387.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqvAIcEqiRzmxv6dkB_jcwyg0kUY81N-CWv2oS4caGgxFcxJvqXyLFFAR_nFoIYWV0Sw1tFsoBtsVjwbqnKYqQf2QUHjX-6Hq0Rggn2x7fjn39SaSfahKIl2cG1yUGpZvh0elX6rFl89s/s1600/IMG_0387.JPG" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
You can see the dyeing and distressing better in this photo I think<br />
<br />
Now onto Sleeping Beauty!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08335787409949796278noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367418494690208133.post-12789682374939533242013-12-07T08:48:00.000-08:002014-04-15T03:20:03.068-07:00Wuthering Heights; Cathy's Dresses<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjha0_KKUC4g4LgP3mS6I0PRPpISiNc4Uch4YtZS8oFFi5EmS2A-owls8_3NznFf7UmJrLScUqghINQiiro3h947I0sVGj7fNZXwWilgQo1cQ-dyLOp_mNVEZHUjZdN8TcHUL1jg3kbKnQ/s1600/fancy3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjha0_KKUC4g4LgP3mS6I0PRPpISiNc4Uch4YtZS8oFFi5EmS2A-owls8_3NznFf7UmJrLScUqghINQiiro3h947I0sVGj7fNZXwWilgQo1cQ-dyLOp_mNVEZHUjZdN8TcHUL1jg3kbKnQ/s1600/fancy3.JPG" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
As Cathy had 4 or 5 dresses to herself I thought I would do a separate post just about those first off.<br />
<br />
As you can see in my designs, I had planned for them to have accurate 18th century shapes and I had made 18th century bum rolls for all the female characters from the 18th century time period, but because of the physical nature of the play it was decided that they shouldn't be worn, which is why none of the photographs have them in. It was a bit of a shame in terms of the look of the costumes, but when I went to see the play I did understand that it was probably true that it wouldn't have worked, there was a lot of falling over and fighting which would have made the bum rolls shift around probably.<br />
<br />
The Photos are all after the Jump...<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Cathy's Main Dress;<br />
<br />
<br />
So for the dress that cathy wears for the majority of the first half of the play I wanted something that was clearly the right era, late 18th century, but also that was more practical for Cathy to run around the moors in. A while ago I watched In the Company of Wolves, in which the main character begins the story wearing just a blouse, corset and skirt;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWtrFXDLa3vTZvIQlOCkscwLxzkGH-jzFJmbnli0LZ8Fy0oZnoI46MUAQNyN03wgl-hBIAD9ajdITyjozdOM5AjyZ9Q6QxBDyYeZWCjdcQhgYbAJ6F6WJ00nNcRs4ej33rzaSD1i5vWd4/s1600/company_of_wolves7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWtrFXDLa3vTZvIQlOCkscwLxzkGH-jzFJmbnli0LZ8Fy0oZnoI46MUAQNyN03wgl-hBIAD9ajdITyjozdOM5AjyZ9Q6QxBDyYeZWCjdcQhgYbAJ6F6WJ00nNcRs4ej33rzaSD1i5vWd4/s320/company_of_wolves7.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a><br />
<div>
</div>
<br />
I liked how the visible blouse gives the costume more of a country feel to her, so i decided to use this for Cathy.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
For most of the characters that live at Wuthering heights I used greys, greens and browns to reflect the moors, but I wanted Cathy to have something a bit different so she is mainly in purples and blues. These colours still reflect the moors and heather but also make her stand out a bit from the rest of the family.<br />

So there doesnt really seem to be any photos taken of this costume while on stage, but here are my reference pictures that I took backstange;<br />

Cathys Funeral Dress;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<br />
After Cathys Father dies, Hindley brings his new wife home who exclaims that she doesnt like that cathy is wearing black, so a black funeral dress was needed to be made.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<br />
I based this dress on the basic styles of the Chemise de la reine of the late 18th century, as well as one of the dresses worn by keira knightley in the duchess;<br />

But obviously instead of the lighter colours that the chemise dress was traditionally, I made it black for mourning.<br />

For this dress, there still arent many photographs of it from onstage, as it wasnt really worn for that long, but I think this dress was actually one of my favourites as I really loved the fabric, which is black cotton with black floral embroidery on it and I really love the way it gathers at the front.<br />

Cathy's Posh Dress;<br />
<br />
After Cathy arrives back from staying at the Lintons house, it is noted how her clothing and appearance have changed and that she has been given a new dress by the Lintons, so I designed a posher less practical dress for Cathy to wear at this point.<br />
For this dress I wanted it to be much more decorative and have more obvious floral patterns, for inspiration I looked at robe l'anglaise and also casaquin jackets of the 18th century;<br />

I was also slightly inspired by the costumes of the hobbits from 'The Hobbit', their costumes were much more developed than the hobbits in lord of the rings and had a clear 18th century influence. I can't find any good images online unfortunatley, I got the images that I liked from The Hobbit behind the scences book that I got for christmas, they really are lovely though, I will post them sometime if I remember.<br />
<br />
I kept her in the same colours of blues and purples that her earlier outfit was in, but with much lighter tones.<br />

The fabric for the bodice is a light blue with a floral rose pattern in cream, it has a gathered flounce around the neckline and the sleeve, as well as some lace, and fastens with hooks and eyes at the front. The skirt is made from lilac chiffon, which originally was going to have a gathered blue trim but we decided that it would make the skirt look to heavy and weighed down at the bottom. I had also slightly run out of time.<br />

Wedding Dress<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<br />
I had very little to do with the wedding dress, as it was decided it was needed after I had already left for university unfortuantley. However, there was a discussion about whether the dress should be white or not. Obviously the convention of having a white dress wasn't really in place in the 18th century, but we decided that for modern audiences and as it was only on stage really for a few seconds, we thought it should be clear that it was a wedding dress.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
In the novel and the script, Cathy is described as wearing a loose white gown at this point, as quite a few years have passed since Heathcliffe left Wuthering Heights, so the dresses are starting to lean towards the later styles of higher waists. Especially as she is pregnant and cannot wear the tighter waited garments.<br />

Nelly;</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Nelly works at both wuthering heights and the Grange, and through telling the story of Heathcliffe and Cathy to Lockwood narrates the story. She is on stage for the majority of the play as she narrates and is shown to partake in all the different time periods. While she is in the different times, she couldn't really change between scenes as sometimes she went from talking to Lockwood straight into the reminiscences of the past so because of this I wanted her costume to seem to fit in all the different times. My main inspiration for her costume was this image of an 18th century maid;</div>

Young Cathy;<br />
The Daughter of Cathy and the wife of Heathcliffes son Linton. As she is from the later period of the book her dress has the higher waistline heading towards the regency era. However, I am not a huge fan of the dresses of the regency era, so I took inspiration from the 2005 kiera knightly adaption of Pride and Prejudice, with the waistline not quite at the bust line and still with a more corseted look. As with Cathy, young cathy has the purples in her costume that none of the other characters had, but its slightly lighter than Cathy, as she is a more innocent naive character, to begin with at least. I think that this dress was possibly my favourite of the girls costumes and worked really well on stage.<br />

Like everyone else who lives at Wuthering heights, Hindley and Francis are in browns and greens, all earth colours. Frances is wearing a zone front dress, with a green linen jacket and an embroidered chiffon skirt and stomacher. When Hindley is young he wears just the waistcoat and breeches but when he comes home after his father has died he has brought a wife home with him and he is trying to appear more respectable so he has a jacket and necktie. </div>

Edgar and Issabella;</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For Edgar and Issabella as they are richer and posher than Cathy and her family, I wanted them to stand out in contrast. They are both in much lighter pastel colours of greens and yellows and in fancier styles and fabrics. Issabellas dress has more decoration and lace than any of cathys dresses. Issabella is shown to be pregnant later in the play but instead of making a whole second pregnancy costume for her, like Cathy, I wanted a dress that could be adapted for a pregnancy as well. I used a combination of the chemise de la reine and zone front styles so that when the sash is on, the dress looks like a normal structured 18th century dress, but when the sash is taken off a bump can be put under the dress and the fabric flows out to create a pregnancy shape.</div>

I am having so much fun with it. a few of the costumes I am making this year have quite a lot of knitwear and stuff involved in it so I thought it would be good for that, and I also love knitting but never have the time to make a full garment by hand.<br />
For my first project this year I did Uglies, which is a Science Fiction novel by Scott Westerfeld. I will be making three costumes from this proejct for the costume show at the end of this year (my final year :/) We have just finished our first design project so we have finally started making so I can start showing you guys what I am doing :)<br />
<br />
So this is the costume that I am making first (sorry the image quality of my illustration is a bit crap, it looks better in real life i promise...) ;<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
She is the main character of the book, and this is a costume that I designed for when she is living in an encampment in the forest called The Smoke. My model for this costume is the same as for my School for Scandel costume last year.<br />
I started by making a Toile mock up for the dress</div>
<br />

So there is a nice fitted dress with a circular skirt an fastening up the back. On top is a jumper with an open back with cowl snood collar, that I will be knitting. The dress will be made from a brownish tweed fabric that I bought when I was down in London a few weeks ago and the underskirt will be made from a cream silk noile fabric. Both the dress and the Skirt is will be distressed.<br />
I started by knitting the scarf/ cowl first as I have never actually knitted a ful garment so I was a bit daunted about the idea of working out the knitting pattern and shaping for it.<br />
Just a few progress photographs I took during knitting;<br />

Both the scarf and the jumper have various cables and lacework patterns on them<br />

And Finally, I worked out the pattern for the jumper using a tension swatch and complicated guage calculations etc which were all quite difficult but it seems to be going okay so far.<br />
I haven't done the back sections yet, but the front and sleeves are both finished.<br />
The Front has a lacework pattern and two plaited cables down the front, although I am not sure how well you can see that.<br />

<br />
So thats it so far, but I have a full day of pattern cutting on monday so there might be more to see soon :)<br />
<br />
Also, I went to see Wuthering Heights on Friday, so hopefully photographs of that to follow soon.<br />

So far all my designs are done and I have made nearly three of the costumes. However, as much as i really want to post about it and show you everything, the director doesnt want any visuals of the play untill after the play has been finished and performed. Which isnt until November :( So unfortunatley, as with work and this play i don't have any time for my own stuff so that means i wont be posting much if at all over this summer, which is a bummer seen as the summer is usually when i have the time to post about stuff. Never mind though, there will be an overloading of posts at the beggining of November!! Its really fun though, sort of dark 18th century stuff.
I look forward to showing you haha

In fourth year, which is the final year, you get to chose what play you want to study and design for and then make a minimum of 2-3 costumes for that play.<br />
I have decided that I want to design for Sleeping Beauty. I have a great many ideas so far, but I am currently focusing my thinking on Sleeping Beauty and the Evil Fairy, as those are the 2 that i definatley want to make in the end as well as probably the prince and if possible one or two of the good fairies as well I want to make 5 overall, but that's pretty ambitious so I don't know how well that will work out. But I figure if i get started on the research stages straight away by the time i get back in September for 4th year I will be ready to make straight away.<br />
<br />
So my ideas are;<br />
- For the evil fairy, instead of an Old Crone, as she is described in the fairy tale I want to make her a fiercer character, stronger, probably closer to the maleficent from the Disney version. Her cursing of the princess is a very aggressive move, almost like the start of a war or attack against the royal family. Because of this i want to make some form of metal costume, with armour elements to portray her paranoid and aggressive nature.<br />
- For sleeping Beauty I really want to work on distressing her dress, as she is a princess her dress should be quite grand and decorated but at the same time she has been asleep for a hundred years; while her body has been preserved the fabric has begun to decay and dirty over the years. I like the idea of the contrast between the grand embroidered dress that is then destroyed and dirtied.<br />
Also for sleeping beauty i am discussions with an illustrator who is interested in a collaboration. On Sleeping beauty's dress i like the idea of there being some intricate and delicate embroidery on the front with roses and trailing briars, like the briars that grow up around her and the castle, that trail off into the skirt of the dress. The illustrator will design this intricate floral pattern which i will then embroider onto the front of the dress.<br />
- In the original fairytale the prince is quite a sinister character, for starters he is married when he finds Sleeping Beauty in her tower and he proceeds to rape her before she wakes up. In the original it is not the kiss of the prince that wakes her, it is after she has given birth to two children and they suckle at her finger dislodging the splinter from the spinning wheel. While i don't really want rape to be a part of my interpretatino of sleeping beauty, i think it would be interesting to explore this slightly more devious side of the prince, giving a bit of a change from the generic prince charming character.<br />
<br />
I also have a few ideas for the fairies but not really well enough in my head to articulate.<br />
<br />
So i spent this afternoon distressing and having a bit of fun with fabric....<br />
I ordered these 'ageing sprays' off a website that i found and i thought i would give them a try...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimu2TlQj_Vw0vvAexMRfUVCkPjGYnCdFmk-__iU6XPKKLoiABdIhnL6yAfnOAMOzOrsFLSdF8V80n0XrZQR7rYZ8-00ODZskzmx12zUc08kEbfim4EK7_g49qHKAa1lJkvBQRJTA87pos/s1600/IMG_1063.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimu2TlQj_Vw0vvAexMRfUVCkPjGYnCdFmk-__iU6XPKKLoiABdIhnL6yAfnOAMOzOrsFLSdF8V80n0XrZQR7rYZ8-00ODZskzmx12zUc08kEbfim4EK7_g49qHKAa1lJkvBQRJTA87pos/s320/IMG_1063.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
I really quite liked the effect that they gave, I think i may order a couple of different colours aswell. These two are 'ash blonde' and 'mould'. Ash blonde gives of a very light brown yellowey colour and the mould makes spots and splatters of a greeny blue colour<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_XNANBFXnE48peaHs8DjkGi3m2JYYSICIg-ktJrKXc9RGwtHoYfj-EHcEj0fD2i2j_CucR5pqCLioXewr8WqDUHnrDUq5DnI2o5n76vkleoiQCstwKyHeUex8TKsiMpW23C9fZ9sHkF4/s1600/IMG_1047.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_XNANBFXnE48peaHs8DjkGi3m2JYYSICIg-ktJrKXc9RGwtHoYfj-EHcEj0fD2i2j_CucR5pqCLioXewr8WqDUHnrDUq5DnI2o5n76vkleoiQCstwKyHeUex8TKsiMpW23C9fZ9sHkF4/s320/IMG_1047.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I also did a bit of tea and coffee staining, although these results weren't as successful. I think this was down to the fabrics i was using, which were mainly synthetic so didn't soak up the tea very well at all.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGBi7hg0pJTSiPGWcw__bPmgLXlGK6NVUZuq0QtbQZPqvWBEvmtZpO3WctpnjegubhyKkyvUIOTjWM7cGjYkIwpcsZ85Vk15bFv5-dWs3-B_wG0kBF4F-9O_mztRqydRAvNrbqn9IaZzg/s1600/IMG_1053.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGBi7hg0pJTSiPGWcw__bPmgLXlGK6NVUZuq0QtbQZPqvWBEvmtZpO3WctpnjegubhyKkyvUIOTjWM7cGjYkIwpcsZ85Vk15bFv5-dWs3-B_wG0kBF4F-9O_mztRqydRAvNrbqn9IaZzg/s320/IMG_1053.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I also broke out my new hot gun to give the fabric a bit of a melt, which looks okay but it makes the fabric quite stiff and weird because of the melting of the fabrics fibers I think the hot gunning technique needs more practice. In the end though i had quite a large selection of different techniques that I am happy with.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUTFypNJ6mvIVLgBoBYDksJZL7ZkTWuYIfUKIEEZoSCK3TCiXKXSiTHRhZTiHQUIUBDte2snBJqWyuIzlhZ2RHrh7olRn_1ohbLnKgYVTYaEHdnqeagE_89J_-On3V5z7KW6JPD4EB0Y4/s1600/IMG_1069.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUTFypNJ6mvIVLgBoBYDksJZL7ZkTWuYIfUKIEEZoSCK3TCiXKXSiTHRhZTiHQUIUBDte2snBJqWyuIzlhZ2RHrh7olRn_1ohbLnKgYVTYaEHdnqeagE_89J_-On3V5z7KW6JPD4EB0Y4/s320/IMG_1069.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
I also had a bit of fun with some craft foam. I am still considering using actual metal in the evil fairies costume, but i thought i would also explore the use of craft foam, which i have seen used on cosplay armour online. Craft foam can be heated and moulded, which would be easier than having to hammer the metal into a body shape, and it would be way more comfortable to wear. So I have also been practicing how to then paint the craft foam to still look like convincing metal. I want the corset to have some form of pattern and engraving on, so i cut out two squares of craft foam and then cut out a filigree engraving pattern on one piece. I Spray painted it with 'Hammered' effect spray paint and then added shoe polish and ageing sprays to add texture to it. I am relatively happy with the results, although i think i maybe used too much of the Ash blonde spray, as it now looks a bit too yellowy in places. Perhaps if I get some different colours in the aging sprays in will have a better effect :)<br />

For this project we each were given an era between 1600 and 1950 and we had to design for the same character, Poppea, within that era. We also had to use red as our only colour, and use sheer fabrics that shows the different layers and constructions underneath.<br />
<br />
I am not sure why, but all the photographs look like the contrast has been upped when i uploaded them, they arent normally so dark. But oh well, here they are....<br />

We did 6 shows in two days, as well as three full days of rehearsals before that, so as you can imagine it's been a looon week and I am very nearly asleep as i write this, but it was so much fun and I am already looking forward to next year; which will be my Final Year at ECA and my graduating show!! Scary stuff!<br /><br />After one of the shows we did a mini photo shoot of all the costumes, the red Poppea dresses and our other Collection for school for scandal, which I will post later as that is a bit much all for one post.</div>

So I have had a bit of free time the last few days and yesterday I decided to start some work on the Marie Antoinette dress. I have cut out the fabric for the sleeves but haven't put them together yet and I have bought some chiffon type fabric that i am considering doing the ruffles in, but i am not 100% sure i like this chiffon. Its quite blue... not quite the right shade. I will do a few samples and see how i feel.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBmrTVhva2TulwsM0iN20yEeN2CPvqET3Q0oy3d7XXww-YPutFdSsEbXD9XK1IAbfrQUtN9dkDAuB_-tHaAQI0n7NnXs71z9SIXDWaqF1ziN_PixAssxE-L2RCA8eM3mb2mlY6RDVr_d4/s1600/IMG_7608.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBmrTVhva2TulwsM0iN20yEeN2CPvqET3Q0oy3d7XXww-YPutFdSsEbXD9XK1IAbfrQUtN9dkDAuB_-tHaAQI0n7NnXs71z9SIXDWaqF1ziN_PixAssxE-L2RCA8eM3mb2mlY6RDVr_d4/s320/IMG_7608.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
I have lost a bit of weight recently and as a result i am smaller than my mannequin now so the costume doesnt fit properly. From the looks of this, its not my waist that the weights come off unfortunately...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9EwscGDfee7wzb1Lpoe6AvzxMb__jNE1jeyCEsXkqY3cu8XDQcxFkA5U9-4Q5iNdpwVK8sm3zcodzN-litYG9CgLNlqWTOz1BsXLZEeKwVi6sfrLRdc1qRJRt4HlJtQawI8D70Bw8f9U/s1600/IMG_7603.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9EwscGDfee7wzb1Lpoe6AvzxMb__jNE1jeyCEsXkqY3cu8XDQcxFkA5U9-4Q5iNdpwVK8sm3zcodzN-litYG9CgLNlqWTOz1BsXLZEeKwVi6sfrLRdc1qRJRt4HlJtQawI8D70Bw8f9U/s320/IMG_7603.JPG" width="204" /></a></div>
The back pleats and skirt, the skirt is currently waay to long<br />

Close up on the en fourreau pleats and skirt pleats. Those loose threads need cutting...<br />
<br />
I hope to make the sleeves this afternoon and play around with the chiffon so who knows, i may have another update for you soon :)<br />

So the rest of the costume that goes with the wig is starting to take shape. For this costume we were given only 4 weeks to make the toile and the real thing (at the same time as an essay and other context deadlines) so as you can imagine its been pretty hectic. We have until tuesday the 4th, so i am 2 weeks in and already finished the toile and quite well on the real thing so i think it will all be fine :)<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiic7uu4W4Rw9qAqFt4Lldbd1NgmasExgDYz1eqsHbqOvQPeJ1wPmbnkI3QotZAQ190wEpkXNsy4M6-qFP7uYe_UjMSXfsmJ67eBSX1fwC7FHc2KmIw8Z8FuSrwhKEocMKR70seyWvYzdU/s1600/photo+(1).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiic7uu4W4Rw9qAqFt4Lldbd1NgmasExgDYz1eqsHbqOvQPeJ1wPmbnkI3QotZAQ190wEpkXNsy4M6-qFP7uYe_UjMSXfsmJ67eBSX1fwC7FHc2KmIw8Z8FuSrwhKEocMKR70seyWvYzdU/s320/photo+(1).JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
The back has a pleated peplum that i have just spent all day embroidering along the border of with a trailing flower design that i drew out myself.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhijvY-vf2ucWRFNg2bk_Yylay_K4CeqahxuL8MGYQk3n-1RT6lH-sqwyadRXo6n-T3SBJJ9dktj8UNF4bqPo7dVMO_QU6MxrBVuFQxqdEAZ8y9DKe_j_wsKKS7tee4vA3Mtlu0ivNgaJU/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhijvY-vf2ucWRFNg2bk_Yylay_K4CeqahxuL8MGYQk3n-1RT6lH-sqwyadRXo6n-T3SBJJ9dktj8UNF4bqPo7dVMO_QU6MxrBVuFQxqdEAZ8y9DKe_j_wsKKS7tee4vA3Mtlu0ivNgaJU/s320/photo.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
The Front of the Bodice has a diamond opening design, and underneath is a dip dyed chemise. Worn over a pair of panniers and a pair of breeches, which you can just see at the bottom. The breeches are made of an embroidered cotton.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7SF7Eu74Trn496HSD3Jm4kXih6UhE_ruOO63J19DucYqFvrc5qNHtPfFf4e7Rgp7A10rn1Szjws7yz9H_eVe8hMZWhIsv4Ie8Cddsdq8ReGtFqm7fR612UoRA-VbpFpsPtUxqZ4mVq8c/s1600/photo+(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7SF7Eu74Trn496HSD3Jm4kXih6UhE_ruOO63J19DucYqFvrc5qNHtPfFf4e7Rgp7A10rn1Szjws7yz9H_eVe8hMZWhIsv4Ie8Cddsdq8ReGtFqm7fR612UoRA-VbpFpsPtUxqZ4mVq8c/s320/photo+(2).JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
The wig reaches down to below the peplum. Uunderneath the pleats of the peplum is a laced up corset, the lacing is then covered with the en fourreau back is done up with an invisible zip down the centre seam.<br />
<br />
Detailed photographs will be taken on my good camera with the costume on the model rather than a mannequin once it has been fully completed. These ones were just taken on my friends i phone so they arent great quality<br />

<span style="text-align: start;">So for our next project, 'School for Scandal', we have to make one of the costumes and we only have 4 weeks to do it! That includes the toile and the real thing. In my design interpretation of the play i made all the characters have animal characteristics; the character that I have chosen to make is Lady Teazle who i have made into a cat. The wig on this character is the main feature, which i decided to make first to get it done and not have to worry about it anymore.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">I started with the longest curliest wig that i could find in an auburn colour and bought two of them so that i could then use the second one to add length.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTtOy3RmsziXXD_5MM1gMv0gLcpxWeejWXaEcEWi_s7143Yr78-R_ZOH3_m7sIDDDQZ9FjzHDcVXj_c0VS7EbNG1MZzzfoKueVWCjWBKh7ttYe_zxTkRKP1v0sLfZNt-wXhfRUaQHx91w/s1600/IMG_7415.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTtOy3RmsziXXD_5MM1gMv0gLcpxWeejWXaEcEWi_s7143Yr78-R_ZOH3_m7sIDDDQZ9FjzHDcVXj_c0VS7EbNG1MZzzfoKueVWCjWBKh7ttYe_zxTkRKP1v0sLfZNt-wXhfRUaQHx91w/s320/IMG_7415.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I made to frames out of thick milenary wire in the shape of cat ears, then covered it in a thin layer of wadding.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I put both of the structures on the top of the wig and sewed them down in the position that they looked best.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaiOFQHkCBZVaBsD2MDwFSDi6T26Ll86Pt6p3cjgwkfEesX5EZsGXcnilxIWWyvWYzYPNJmYtAYjR_0X58lw-3Q15IsVMKLzk-VRhhlbS3kqeG8jvIt-aPW143Se6EYMi9y1jU5tEJ3HQ/s1600/IMG_7423.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaiOFQHkCBZVaBsD2MDwFSDi6T26Ll86Pt6p3cjgwkfEesX5EZsGXcnilxIWWyvWYzYPNJmYtAYjR_0X58lw-3Q15IsVMKLzk-VRhhlbS3kqeG8jvIt-aPW143Se6EYMi9y1jU5tEJ3HQ/s320/IMG_7423.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Bringing strands of hair from all around the structure i wrapped it round the ears and then arranged it on the top in a hopefully aesthetic way.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
At the back I curled the different sections in circular sections and pinned them in place and then hand sewed all around the ears and curls so that they were all securely fastened onto the frame.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAXD73aj1XHBb0oBnk6Men-umN0BBYxnpl0t7YpetZOI6IlxuGCRlvBe3DS91xtVdRdyuZN3QDGBhyphenhyphenXWDwFPfSV5RFNkouPJ7I_cYTlS6cXUDDzPcEjtjPWkGUa79-fcXTRXCUhMTRrWk/s1600/IMG_7436.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAXD73aj1XHBb0oBnk6Men-umN0BBYxnpl0t7YpetZOI6IlxuGCRlvBe3DS91xtVdRdyuZN3QDGBhyphenhyphenXWDwFPfSV5RFNkouPJ7I_cYTlS6cXUDDzPcEjtjPWkGUa79-fcXTRXCUhMTRrWk/s320/IMG_7436.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the braid i cut apart the second wig so that i had three strands of extra length and then glued and hand sewed them to three strands of the original wig. Once they were all attached together I braided it all together into one long braid. Unfortunately the part where the second wig was attached is thicker that the rest which i am not entirely happy with, but i don't think there's anything i can do about it. Hopefully it doesn't look too bad?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqh14eU5ZW2BBP2q65HRFJFi54usNCJXgvt1lWPqwGnBrtuJrpVBfRVnJIaxlKadxStI8YTofLnZBBXk_q4FPUbRTvdIQj7qwxCxy0G3yNl9lg-wQ40x0plaS1_I0fzI1_XCJS5AF3_Is/s1600/IMG_7438.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqh14eU5ZW2BBP2q65HRFJFi54usNCJXgvt1lWPqwGnBrtuJrpVBfRVnJIaxlKadxStI8YTofLnZBBXk_q4FPUbRTvdIQj7qwxCxy0G3yNl9lg-wQ40x0plaS1_I0fzI1_XCJS5AF3_Is/s320/IMG_7438.JPG" width="110" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Theres still some finishing touches to make, bows and ribbons to add and some smoothing down to do. The Wig is slightly frizzy in places with the hairs sticking up a bit, does anyone have any tips how to keep wigs in good condition and smooth down static and stray hairs? I have tried hairspray but it doesnt seem to work on the synthetic wig. Any tips would be great :)</div>

<br />
Made a small amount of progress on the Marie Anntoinette dress, i found 5 metres of a lovely blue silk fabric on ebay<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_tHPOXdpiLMZQNfHjSqW26q7Vj-lFkMG1iL-NY1KNn5RF0soqymsI4n8d0NBUoN6jz0-H7TOzJe3F_AaPo4SqCNS9jWhODpo7vEO87pO1liaZZn8rCYTZzZpjVV8RdfSuDYnyXJEmULk/s1600/IMG_0940.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_tHPOXdpiLMZQNfHjSqW26q7Vj-lFkMG1iL-NY1KNn5RF0soqymsI4n8d0NBUoN6jz0-H7TOzJe3F_AaPo4SqCNS9jWhODpo7vEO87pO1liaZZn8rCYTZzZpjVV8RdfSuDYnyXJEmULk/s320/IMG_0940.JPG" width="279" /></a></div>
As per usual the photograph doesnt do the fabric justice and the shade doesnt quite look right but it really is very close to the colour of the real thing i think.<br />
I also found an antique broach which looks very much like the belt clasp that she is wearing on the red velvet belt<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
